China Crisis se formó en Liverpool por Gary Daly (vocales, bajo, synths) y Eddie Lundon (guitarra, percusión, synths) (Ambos habían empezado a componer después de terminar el colegio) . En 1981 debutaron con el single “African and white” al que le siguió “Scream down at me” en 1982. Ambos sencillos se editaron en el pequeño sello independiente Inevitable (donde habían fichado bandas como Modern Eon, Faction, y unos primerizos Dead Or Alive) .
China Crisis firmó luego por Virgin quienes re-editaron “African and White”, el cual fue un hit menor en GB llegando sólo al lugar 45 de los charts. El Primer album “Difficult shapes and passive rhtyhms, some people think it’s fun to enetertain” aparece a finales de 1982 y llega al lugar 21. Para entonces la banda consistia de Gary, Eddie y Dave Reilly (bateria, percusión y synths). Para 1984 y con el lanzamiento de “Working with fire and steel: possible pop songs vol.2″ La banda reemplaza a Reilly con Kevin Wilkinson (Waterboys, Squeeze, Proclaimers, etc.) y Gary “Gazza” Johnson (bajo) y entre los músicos invitados destaca Steve Levy en el oboe cuyo sonido distingue a CC durante esta etapa y Anthony Thistlethwaite en el saxofón.
Después del éxito en Europa del segundo album, China Crisis atrajo el interés de Walter Becker (la otra mitad de Steely Dan) quién produce el tercer album “Flaunt the imperfection”, que se edita en abril de 1985. Aparentemente Becker no fue la primera elección de los muchachos, ellos querian a Brian Eno pero no estuvo disponible en ese momento. El resultado fue bastante elegante, muy trabajado…muy “steelydanizado” (como lei por ahi!). Este fue el album más exitoso de la banda llegando al puesto 9 en el Reino Unido. De este album se extrajeron 4 sencillos: “Black Man Ray” (Nº 14), “King In A Catholic Style” (Nº 19), “You Did Cut Me” (Nº 54) y “The Highest High”. Por la época de “You Did…” se editó un video de promos “Showbiz absurd”
